Year in Review: The Best Ria Stories of 2017

After a year of steady growth marked with plenty of key achievements, we take a look back at some of the highlights of 2017.

Last year was an extra special one for Ria, with the company celebrating its 30 Year Anniversary.  Founded in 1987, in just 30 years, the company has built a network of 332,000 locations with services in 146 countries.

Our continued success is possible thanks to the dreams of millions of international migrants that continue to choose and trust Ria every day to deliver their hard-earned money. To all our customers, we say Thank You.  (Click to see video)

Anniversaries and Festivities

As part of the 30 Year Anniversary celebrations, a gala and awards event was held to honour our banking partners in Ghana. It was a fun-filled evening with many banks and their employees receiving awards for their services. Of the more than 20 banks in attendance, many had been with Ria since we began offering services in Ghana in 2008.

Another significant anniversary celebrated in 2017 was our partnership with Walmart in the US.  Walmart2Walmart Powered by Ria marked its third year by dropping prices even further. Since launching in 2014, customers have enjoyed nearly half a billion dollars in savings.

Ria also sponsored the 38th edition of the Carrera Popular de Canillejas – Trofeo José Cano in Madrid, Spain. Around 50 Ria employees from the EMEA and South Asia headquarters participated and wore the official t-shirt which bore our 30th Anniversary emblem.

Finally, Ria’s regional hub in San Salvador celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2017. The company, with its 600 staff in the region, remains an important connection between Ria’s Global Headquarters in California, USA and the rest of Latin America.

Honours and Awards

The Ria Americas’ Customer Service team received a top honour and were awarded the Best in Customer Service in Americas 2017 at The Contact Center World Awards

The event was held in Florida by Contact Center World – the largest contact center and customer engagement association in the world – and also saw Ria take home the Industry Champion Award.

In the United Kingdom, we were named the Most Reliable Money Transfer Company by the Bangladeshi community and Ria also won creative marketing awards for its South Asian Marketing campaigns.

Marketing Manager for the UK & Ireland, Dharmashinee “Yeshee” Saccaram Tengur scooped two awards for her creative efforts, winning top prizes at the Pakistani Music and Media Awards and later, the Asian Media Awards.

New Services and Products

In 2017, Ria continued to innovate and improve customer experience by streamlining the money transfer process.

In April, Asda Money Transfer Powered by Ria, was launched for customers in the United Kingdom. The online service offers competitive money transfer through Ria’s global network, with selected stores rolling out an in-store remittance service.

October saw the launch of the new mobile applicationMy Ria in Spain. The app, which stages a transaction, allows customers to initiate money transfers through their mobile device, and pay for them in-store by simply scanning a barcode at the checkout of any participating location.

In December, the app was introduced to Chile with more launches planned for 2018.

Customer kindness

Following the widespread flooding in Peru during April, members of the Peruvian community in Rome got together to raise funds for those affected. In total, they collected over €17,000 and trusted Ria to send it directly to the Peruvian Red Cross.

2017 also saw one of the worst hurricane seasons in decades, with hurricanes damaging homes and infrastructure in the Caribbean, North and Central America, with earthquakes decimating parts of Mexico.

Through our network of stores, selected agents and website, thousands of big-hearted customers showed their overwhelming support by donating to our partner, the American Red Cross. In total, an impressive $120,179 was raised providing relief for those affected. Thank you!

Super-sized network

Ria continued to connect its global networks in 2017. In May, we announced our official launch in the Middle East and partnership with three leading agents in India – Paul Merchants Limited, Weizmann Forex Limited and Transcorp International Limited – adding tens of thousands of high-quality locations.

As India is the number one remittance receiving country in the world, these partnerships serve to strengthen our network and allow Ria to keep delivering money where it’s needed most.

Over in Latin America, we opened our ninth retail store in Chile since our first store opened its doors just three years ago. We also launched partnerships with Ecobank Ghana, and Government Savings Bank in Thailand, as well as key partnerships in Montenegro with the Post Office and Lovcen Banka.

While there were many other highlights, these are just a few that we think illustrate Ria’s story of 2017. Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed this trip down memory lane and we look forward to bringing you even more news in 2018!
